Green Irrigation System

Being Acting Treasurer has introduced me to a variety of features required to maintain the green which I had limited knowledge of. One of these was the green’s watering system.

There are 4 sprinklers set into the green surround which are controlled from a panel located on the wall in the Ladies’ changing room. This controller is usually set to cycle the sprinklers at midnight (Programme A) and at 6:00am (Programme B). Each sprinkler runs for 7 minutes each but this can be changed if necessary. Whatever time is set, it will be the same for both Programmes. There is a manual available if adjustments need to be made.

Sprinkler 1 is located on the patio, 2 is on the side with the advertising boards, 3 is on the river side and 4 is on the side by the small side gate.

At the start of the season, Argo Irrigation visit us, open the valve to the water tank (by the spiral staircase), switch the timer to manual and run the sprinklers to make sure they are operating correctly.

Our Green keeper then operates the system during the season to make sure the green is getting the right amount of water. Our system doesn’t have a “rain detector” which would, I guess, stop the system running when we have rain.

At the end of the season, we ask Argo to close down the system. They fix up a pump to the sprinklers to flush them out. This should prevent breaks happening from freezing temperature. They then close the valve to the tank.

Finally, on the side of the green which has the small side gate, there is a manhole cover in which there is a tap so the water to the hose can be switched off over winter.
