Despite threatened poor weather, this year's Good Friday Walk went off a treat. As usual, we started off the morning with bacon rolls kindly provided by Sally and Angelika, washed down with tea or coffee which had been set up by Jeanie. Then at 10:00am, 14 intrepid walkers piled into their cars and drove up to Rocky Lane just south of Highmoor. Most of the walk used the metalled roadways through the Nettlebed Estate which is run by the current members of the Fleming family who live locally (that's Fleming of James Bond fame). The route we took is shown below and was just short of 4 miles.
The last part of the walk was over a ploughed field which wasn't expected as that field was in a perfectly acceptable state 3 days earlier when Kevin checked it out. However, even with a muddy end to the walk, it didn't detract from the overall event and despite a fresh wind, the sun shone from time-to-time and the weather couldn't have been much better considering recent days.
Although we didn't walk past it, we could just see the Horseman statue at Bromsden Farm. This is a fibreglass prop reportedly made for the James Bond film, Golden Eye. Apparently it used to have Pegasus-like wings, but these have long since broken off.
Half way around the walk, John Wilkinson kindly took a photo of us all as shown below.
We returned to the Club house shortly after 12:30pm where we discovered our numbers had swelled to 30 and we sat down for a tasty lunch of turkey or vegetable soup, crusty bread followed by hot-cross buns and mince-pies. A very big thank you to Gill Robins for providing the vegetable soup, Sally for the turkey soup, bread, buns etc and to Sally, Angelika and Jeanie for setting up the tables and prepping the food. We mustn't forget Andy of course for running the bar and Norman and Kevin for arranging the walk. Most of all though, we must thank all those who supported the event whether it was walking, eating or both. The funds raised all go to helping the Club maintain the green and keep subs down.
